Tell us a little more about yourself

I grew up in Edinburgh before joining the Royal Navy at 19 years old, where I served as an Officer on-board the UK’s nuclear submarine fleet. After 7 years, I left the service and joined BACS Payment Schemes Ltd. (now Pay.UK) as the Scheme Executive for products and strategy. After 9 months at BACS, I came to GPS to assist in the Operations team and have been with the GPS team for just over a year.

What’s your role at GPS?

I am now fulfilling a role in the fledgling Information Security team, working on key projects to aid GPS’ growth while keeping a firm grasp on the security of our business processes data holdings. This involves working towards ISO 27001/27002 compliance, along with general restructuring of internal security process and documentation.

What does your average day look like?

An average day involves many different tasks – anything from progressing the work toward compliance to assisting other members of the GPS family with their understanding of the platform and services GPS offers to our clients.

What do you like most about your job?

The most enjoyable aspect of working for GPS is the people – the team here are fantastic and it is a real pleasure working with such an incredible team of experts and specialists to better serve both GPS and our incredibly diverse base of clients and partners.

What did you want to do growing up?

Ironically, all I wanted whilst growing up was to become a Naval Officer – which I was fortunate enough to achieve rather early on! Life goals ticked off pretty early.

What would be your advice to anyone wanting to start a career in the same job role and industry as you?

If you’re willing to learn, ask questions and listen to the answers, that will serve anyone well in this industry – and any other.

When you’re not at GPS what do you get up to in your free time?

In my free time, as many of the team here will know, I love to socialise, get to know colleagues on a personal level as well as professional – this is a huge help when understanding how best to go about working with others. Everyone is different! I also enjoy sport, both watching and playing. I am a keen rugby player, box once a week, love Skiing and enjoy rowing and sailing whenever I can get to some water.

If you could be anyone who would it be and why?

I’m content being myself – I’m a pretty cool guy.
