Ben Sunley, Account Manager at Global Processing Services, ran the London Marathon this weekend for a charity called Shine. He is very pleased to have completed it in 4 hours and 27 minutes!
Ben has always been a keen runner, having already completed 4 marathons in his home town of York and also 9 Great North Runs during his time in Newcastle. However, this marathon was a special one for him as the charity he ran for is one that is very close to his heart and those of his family.
He became a father for the first time last year to a little boy called Joshua. Unfortunately, during the 20 week scan, his wife and Ben received the news that no parent-to-be wants to receive, they had found something on the scan. Following several weeks of back and forth appointments, along with an initial misdiagnosis, it was confirmed that their son had a form of Spina Bifida.
Spina Bifida literally means ‘split spine’ and is where the spine doesn’t form correctly during pregnancy. The impact of Spina Bifida varies and can go from not knowing you have it to not being able to walk. In Joshua’s case, the early signs are good but this can change quite easily. Joshua requires an operation to repair the bottom of his spine, so the Sunley family will be counting on the support that Shine are able to offer.
Ben is hoping to raise £2000 through running the London Marathon in order to help Shine to fund projects such as carer groups and training, their education scheme to provide guidance about the disability, support surrounding mental health and well-being for individuals affected by spina bifida and their family, and many more incredible initiatives.
